CLIENT CASE STUDY

Government Organisation (Telco)

SMG equipped 150 senior leaders from an Australian Government organisation with critical skills to navigate strategic transitions and drive enterprise leadership amidst growing complexity and change.

Summary

Lead 2022 was a strategic leadership initiative carried out by one of Australia’s highest profile Government agencies. In 2020, the organisation determined that its 150 most senior leaders needed to develop their ability to demonstrate ‘enterprise leadership’ as the organisation entered a new phase of maturity and evolution.

Client objectives

SMG provided executive coaching services to these leaders to develop the critical leadership skillsets and mindsets to meet the challenges that lay ahead.

The organisation’s leadership development strategy reflected the reset required for a successful transition from a ‘build’ to an ‘operational’ organisation in the face of increasing complexity, ambiguity disruption and change.

A strategic review highlighted that the transition hinged on building the leadership bench strength in key areas of Enterprise Leadership; such as leading change through a strategic mindset and driving engagement, collaboration, commercial and financial acumen, increased customer focus as well as resilience.

Our process and solution

SMG conducted a program of executive coaching which began with a one-on-one debrief of a 360-leadership diagnostic instrument (the Leadership Circle), followed by a series of one-on-one Executive coaching sessions to help each leader develop the areas of strength identified in the 360 assessment, and to address areas of development. The program also included triangular meetings with each leader’s line manager to ensure that shifts in thinking and behaviour were integrated into the annual development planning cycle.

To ensure the successful execution of this project, a dedicated Project Manager was appointed to plan and coordinate a project that included SMG deployment and matching of 20 SMG coaches to over 150 leaders, across Australia. SMG continues to support this organisation in the development of its leaders.
